For students, the summer holidays are often a time to relax and prepare for the year ahead. However, summer is also a great time to invest in your future career – and summer school is the best way to do that.
Top universities around the world offer summer school programs where participants take classes, gain experience in their chosen field, and even earn credits towards full degree programs.
The renowned Summer School for International University Students at Bocconi University, for example, is a three-week degree program taking place both on campus and online in June and July 2022.
The Summer School in Bocconi, one of Europe’s top universities, is an opportunity for international university students to get a taste of business education at a top school, with courses on hot topics such as digital marketing, entrepreneurship and venture capital.
Bocconi also offers a Summer School Program in Law for students interested in deepening their understanding of international business and digital law.
Looking to expand your business knowledge and learn more about life in a college program? Here are five benefits of attending a top summer school in 2022:
1. Summer schools give you the opportunity to study at a top university
A summer school is an opportunity to see what life at a top business school is really like. If you are interested in pursuing a postgraduate business degree, summer school is a way to see if you enjoy the subject and the experience of attending a top-notch school.
Bocconi Summer School participants have 48 hours of classroom activities Monday through Friday, as well as individual assignments. If you’re unsure about applying to a business school, this experience could change your mind.
2. You learn from top professors in the summer school
At Bocconi, international summer school students can choose between four English-taught on-campus courses: Digital Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, Equity and Venture Capital Financing, and Luxury Management.
Each of these courses is taught by the institution’s top professors, making the experience very close to reality. The summer school on campus also offers company visits where you can learn about business and management from real professionals.
David Doney, a student from Hungary, attended the online version of Bocconi University’s summer school in 2020, where students can choose between International Business Strategy, Equity and Venture Capital Financing or Fashion and Design Management courses.

He combined online learning and extracurricular activities with an internship and enjoyed the experience so much that he decided to apply to Bocconi afterwards. He is now studying Bocconi’s MSc in Management and is completing a dual course offered in cooperation with the French ESSEC Business School.
“The summer school gave me the opportunity to understand a certain aspect of finance through Professor Gigante’s interactive teaching methods and to get a glimpse of Bocconi’s academic environment,” affirms David.
Professor Gimede Gigante is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Accountant and Lecturer in the Department of Finance at Bocconi University and teaches subjects such as international finance and investment banking.
3. Discover a new country and culture during your summer school experience
A summer school is not just an opportunity to explore your chosen subject; It is also an opportunity to get to know life in another country.
Students attending the summer school on the Bocconi University campus will spend three weeks living in the center of Milan, a hub of technology and fashion and home to world-renowned museums and galleries.
For David, the opportunity to learn more about Italian culture was a real highlight of his summer school experience. Even though he attended the online summer school, there were still plenty of opportunities for him to network with his classmates and learn more about Italian culture.
“I was able to immerse myself in the Italian way of life through online activities such as the cooking class where we cooked a traditional Italian pasta recipe “cavatelli with tomato and eggplant”, he adds.
4. Acquire credits at the summer school that can be counted towards a university degree
In addition to the opportunity to discover a new subject or to deepen your business knowledge, the summer school can also contribute to your university degree. Participants in the Bocconi Summer School receive six ECTS points if they successfully pass the final examination, which are credited to an existing Bachelor’s degree in Europe.
The experience is also valuable when applying for a master’s degree in economics after a bachelor’s degree. An independent learning experience like the summer school is valued positively by universities as it shows your commitment to learning and development in your chosen field.
5. Summer schools are a great way to strengthen your network
In addition to the knowledge you gain, the summer school is an opportunity to network with ambitious young students from around the world.
Bocconi University itself has a diverse student body that welcomes almost 5,000 international students from around 100 countries each year.
To apply for Bocconi University Summer School, you must submit your CV, undergraduate exam results, and a letter of motivation explaining why you want to take your chosen course. The participants are selected based on academic performance and suitability for the course.
Whichever Summer School you attend, you will have the opportunity to connect with your peers and build relationships that can extend well into your future career, whatever path you choose.
